Reef Forums helps increase the reef industry
Posted January 14th, 2008 by RyanI am an avid online internet browser, after all it is what I do for my day job. After strolling around the internet looking for reef keeping information I noticed there was one thing in common: There are a lot of reef forums online today. Some are big, some are small, some are large and some are huge. Having said that, another thing I found that all of these forums had in common: they are all growing. Some are growing faster then others but they are all growing, slowly. Why?
In one word: information. When I started reef building, I never thought about going online for reef help, the internet wasn’t around then as the world new the internet. Everybody didn’t have a computer either, it was very different. People would ask you ; “Do you have a computer?”, and you would be like “Yes I do, and I got the internet!”. The internet was nothing then, to learn about reefs you bought a book, you didn’t go online, then the books weren’t the best, no normal advice, mostly all to detailed and long. They didn’t have a paragraph on what you were to do or how your setup should be.
This is quite different from reef forums there you can ask what you want to know and someone will respond in less then one paragraph. You can have some problems, post the problem online, and get an answer within a few minutes. Your problem won’t clear up in a few minutes but at least you won’t be wondering what is wrong with your tank.
Blogs are a newer thing to hit the internet then reef forums. There are a fair amount of reef blogs online today, for example Reef Builders just released RB blogs for members , giving anyone the chance to have a blog about their reef tank.
To me the industry will continue to grow with new people joining the saltwater addiction every day. Let’s just hope that we can stop collecting corals from the wild and grow our own. Because if we don’t, we won’t have any corals to populate our tank. And that my friends will lead to a very unhappy reef builder.
